Water softeners are an excellent addition to the home water system.  We live in an area that has very hard water and having a water softener to remove the diluted minerals can be very beneficial.  Aside from reducing the amount of soaps and detergents needed for cleaning,  softened water can mean less irritation to your skin, better tasting drinking water, and elimination of mineral odors in the water.  Softeners can also extend the life of your water heater, washing machine, dishwasher, shower heads, even your pipes! 

Several states have passed laws against the use of water softeners due to the fact that they put salt into the sewer system through the recharging process.  In many areas the sewage is treated and recycled for drinking water and removing the salt is increasingly more expensive.  As a result, whole house filter system technology has grown and there are several  excellent filter systems that remove minerals from your drinking water.  The process is different from water softeners, but the end result is much cleaner water to drink and no salt added to the fresh water system.
