Water Heater Installation

The days of the conventional tank type water heater are coming to an end.  The biggest problem with a conventional water heater is that it heats and reheats 24 hours a day.  Most of us only need hot water for about an hour a day for showers, dishes, and laundry, but the water heater is reheating and using energy around the clock.  We now have so many new options for heating water and reducing heat costs:

SOLAR COLLECTORS
One of the best and “greenest” options is a thermal solar collector with storage tank(s).  Here in Florida, we get enough sun to heat all the hot water you could ever need. One or more collectors are positioned in a sunny spot and the sun does all the work!  The heated water is circulated through a storage tank and either directly or indirectly (through a heat exchanger) to your hot water pipes.  If you need more capacity, you can add more collectors or more tanks as needed.  There are safety systems built in to protect from freezing, over heating, and nighttime heat loss.

TANKLESS ON-DEMAND
If you don't have the roof space for a solar system or live in a condo with limited space, then you might consider a tankless on-demand water heater.  A small box mounted on the wall replaces that water heater tank with a compact and powerful water heater.  On-demand units have flow sensors that know when you turn on the hot water and immediately begin heating the water.  Tankless water heaters are available in a wide variety of sizes, in gas propane, and electric models.  Depending on your needs, there is most likely a tankless model for you.

HYBRID HEAT PUMP TANK
Older tract homes often can be difficult to upgrade the water heating system.  Many don't have natural gas available, or room for propane tanks to have a gas powered tankless water heater.  Some homes' electrical systems have too little amperage for a tankless electric water heater. Older homes often have large shade trees that make solar systems difficult.  In this case you can still improve on the conventional water heater tank with a hybrid heat pump system.  This type of water heater resembles a conventional electric water heater tank, but has a high efficiency heat pump unit on top.  The heat pump pulls heat from the surrounding air and uses it to heat the water.  This can reduce the cost of water heating by more than 50% and gives you the additional benefit of cooling the area surrounding the water heater tank.  It fits in the same footprint as the conventional tank, uses the same power supply and is the easiest green water heater option to install.
